Live on Deck: Winter 2019

One could argue winter is the season of music appreciation.

It’s cold, it’s dark, you’re drawn to any activity you can do from inside of your house. It’s the perfect time to go down the Discovery Weekly rabbit hole, make a moody playlist, or check out Bands in Town.

And if you’re a proponent of occasionally leaving your bed, you can go where it’s still pretty snug and cozy: shoulder-to-shoulder at one of our local venues, checking out an artist from our Live on Deck playlist at a live show.

Once we get over the hump that is holiday music, we have so much to look forward to! So many new bands to stream, so many artists making their way to Charlottesville, Richmond, and the region. We even have the Grammy’s!

So give our winter playlist a listen, from the comfort of wherever-you-find-comfortable. Read on for our favorites tracks (in order of show date) and click any hyperlink for ticket sales. From all of us at Storyware, have a happy holiday, and we hope to see you at a live show or two!

Page’s Picks

Jimmies Chicken Shack — “Another Day” (12.21, The Canal Club)
This will be my third time seeing Jimmies Chicken Shack since I was 13. Their music makes me look back on summer surf trips and paintball tournaments.

Ballyhoo! — “Mixtape” (1.5, The National)
Listening to reggae music in the dead of winter makes me look forward to summer days and nights spent on a beach.

The Word Alive — “Someone You Loved” (2.14, The National)
I just discovered this band, and I wish this show wasn’t on Valentine’s Day!

Hot Water Music — “Trusty Chords” (2.20, Broadberry *Sold Out*)
I’ve been a Hotwater Music fan ever since I bought my first punkorama CD back in the Warped Tour years. This one is sold out, so I’ll have to catch them another time.

Wicks’s Picks

Bob Marley & The Wailers — “Trenchtown Rock” (2.12, The Jefferson)
I might need to hit this show, simply to help melt the winter blues that always happen around this time of year.

Gallactic — “Crazyhorse Mongoose” (2.16, The Jefferson)
Long time fan of Galactic. Seen them in small bars and giant stages like Jazz Fest. They will get you moving.

Tedeschi Trucks Band — “Keep Growing” (2.18, Altria Theater)
One of my favorite bands on my birthday. Need I say more.

Drive By Truckers — “Surrender Under Protest” (2.19, Jefferson Theater)
Another one of my favorites. It’s going to be a helluva birthday week.

Megan’s Picks

No BS! Brass Band — “Run Around” (12.31, Jefferson Theater)
A Richmond legend and one heck of a live show. I can’t think of a better set to step into the 2020’s with.

Futurebirds — “Crazy Boys” (1.17, The Southern)
In the Venn diagram of affordable venues and music that I dig, The Southern hits the sweet spot every time. I hadn’t heard of this band before this week. And now it’s all I’ve listened to this week.

Donna The Buffalo — “Motor” (2.2, Jefferson Theater)
This song feels like one part Loretta Lynn, one part Peanuts Christmas Album, one part (?) Give it a listen, and let me know if I got that right.

Amanda Shires — “Mineral Wells” (3.15, The Southern)
One fourth of my favorite band, I actually gasped when I saw Amanda Shires was coming to Charlottesville. I love the intimacy and simplicity of this track.
